About Dr. Serell

Sean M. Serell, M.D. is a board-certified anesthesiologist in Fort Collins, Colorado, in continuous clinical and academic practice since 2005. He practices with Northern Colorado Anesthesia Professionals and serves as Assistant Clinical Faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Clinical Practice
His practice emphasizes orthopedic and ambulatory surgery, with particular depth in regional anesthesia — he has placed more than 25,000 peripheral nerve, epidural, and intrathecal blocks over the course of his career. He continues to practice actively across hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers in Northern Colorado and western Nebraska, including Level I and Level III trauma centers, and his experience extends to trauma and emergency anesthesia. His facilities include Poudre Valley Hospital, Medical Center of the Rockies, Longs Peak Hospital, Harmony Surgery Center, and Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He practices through Northern Colorado Anesthesia Professionals, NorthStar Anesthesia in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and his own practice, Serell Anesthesia Services PLLC, and is licensed in both Colorado and Nebraska.
Medical Direction
From 2008 to 2018 he served as Director of Anesthesia Services for the Orthopaedic Center of the Rockies and its associated Convalescent Care Center. In that role he authored policies and procedures governing patient selection for ambulatory surgery, led safety and quality improvement initiatives, and directed staff and patient education. This experience is directly relevant to cases turning on whether a facility's protocols were adequate, and whether they were followed.
Board Governance
He served on the Board of Managers of Northern Colorado Anesthesia Professionals from 2009 to 2018, including a term as Chairman, during a period of significant growth. He was also a founding board member of Encompass Medical Partners, a billing, credentialing, and practice management company serving anesthesia and internal medicine groups.
Teaching
Dr. Serell teaches medical students, residents, and practicing physicians through the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He also serves as volunteer clinical faculty with CU Boulder's Ann and H.J. Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences department, teaching in the Medicine in Space and Surface Environments course. He held certification as an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor for the American College of Surgeons from 2012 to 2021.
Innovation in Medication Safety
He founded Secure Medication Systems LLC, the parent company of Safe-Rx, which designs locking prescription vials for pharmacies dispensing controlled substances. The products are certified child-resistant and senior-friendly under 16 CFR 1700. He holds multiple utility and design patents in this field.
